Tuscany 3 Day Itinerary
Three full days with one Florence base: the city, Siena and an optional hill-town addition, then Pisa with optional Lucca. This flexible route leaves breaks rather than attempting every Tuscan landscape.
In this guide
Three-day overview
Assumes three full days and three nights for a consistent budget. Two nights work only if flight times allow. Late arrival or early departure means removing Lucca or the second town. A car is unnecessary in Florence; use a confirmed tour or one-day car arrangement for rural additions.
| 1 | Florence | Centre, Arno & optional viewpoint | Walking/local transport |
| 2 | Siena | San Gimignano only by confirmed tour/car | Bus/train or organised trip |
| 3 | Pisa | Optional Lucca if return time permits | Train & walking |
Daily itinerary
Day 1 · Unhurried Florence
Morning · 2–3 hours
Explore the centre and cathedral exterior, then nearby squares. Choose only one timed interior if desired; dome and museum admission are not assumed.
Afternoon · 2–3 hours
Lunch and a 45–60-minute break, followed by Piazza della Signoria, Arno and Ponte Vecchio. Passing the Uffizi is not a museum visit.
Evening · 1–2 hours
A short Oltrarno walk or Piazzale Michelangelo if energy and weather permit. Count uphill access and return; a particular sunset time is not guaranteed.
Transport & break
Walk in manageable sections with café seating. Timings are independent planning estimates, not opening hours. Do not drive between every central sight.
Family alternative & booking
Choose squares, river and a longer break instead of climbing or a long museum. A photoshoot is optional and separately booked.
Booking & availability
Optional private Florence photoshoot, not admission to landmarks.
Day 2 · Siena with a conditional addition
Morning · 3–4 hours
Leave early for Siena, establish arrival/return points and walk to Campo and the centre. A local walking tour has its own meeting time.
Booking & availability
Local Siena walking tour, not automatic Florence transport or full cathedral-complex admission.
Afternoon · 2–3 hours
Lunch, a break and cathedral admission if available. Check Sunday/holiday tour terms and ticket scope; the full complex is not assumed included.
Evening · choose one
Return to Florence on public transport. With a car or confirmed San Gimignano tour, replace part of Siena sightseeing with that town; it is not a guaranteed addition for everyone.
Booking & availability
This is a Florence return day trip combining Siena and San Gimignano, not a one-way hotel transfer. Confirm luggage and return arrangements.
Transport & break
Allow roughly 1.5–2 hours each way for Siena depending on service, plus city access. These are planning allowances, not timetables. Add roads, parking and walking for a second town.
Family alternative & booking
Siena alone is easier with children. Remove the extra town and add rest. Product 8421 is local walking, not Florence transport or San Gimignano.
Day 3 · Pisa & optional Lucca
Morning · 3–4 hours
Train to Pisa and reach Piazza dei Miracoli. Begin with photos and exteriors; climb only with explicit tower admission and suitable participants.
Booking & availability
Check an option explicitly including the tower climb and age rules; not every option includes climbing.
Afternoon · 2–3 hours
Lunch and a break. If time is generous and you are not departing today, continue to Lucca after checking trains. Otherwise finish Pisa and return.
Evening · 1–2 hours
In Lucca choose part of the walls and centre instead of several museums, then return with a buffer; alternatively use the evening for luggage and rest.
Booking & availability
Local Lucca walking tour. Check cathedral admission/fees; Florence transport is separate.
Transport & break
Planning allowances: Florence–Pisa about 1–1.5 hours, Pisa–Lucca 30–45 minutes, Lucca–Florence 1.5–2 hours. Service and changes vary; station walking is extra. Check your date.
Family alternative & booking
Pisa alone is lighter. Check tower age/accompaniment rules and keep an adult with any non-climbing child. For flights, omit Lucca and leave a substantial transfer buffer.
Essential bookings
Book accommodation then key timed entry. Verify tower climbing in your option. Siena walking is not intercity transport; choose an explicit combined trip for two towns. Related activity guides use supplied partner booking details.
Where to stay
One base near Firenze Santa Maria Novella works for train days; central accommodation favours walking but check luggage access. Rural stays can require a car and extra road time. Compare actual room, facilities, cancellation and total.
Hotels & accommodation in Tuscany
Choose dates, rooms and children’s ages, then compare location, total and cancellation. This TripMoo Trip.com link opens accommodation search, not a confirmed hotel booking or fixed price.
Airports & transport
Arrival at Florence or Pisa airport is not arrival at your hotel. Check your date’s airport-to-city/station service and final hotel connection. For departures add check-in, luggage and airport margins. Check Trenitalia and local operators for service works and replacements.
Estimated budget

Family & travel tips
Wear suitable shoes, bring an evening layer and keep a rain alternative. Choose one main interior daily and avoid adjacent timed bookings. For driving check permitted parking/ZTL and child seats. Use a non-drinking driver after alcohol tasting. Verify opening and availability for your date.
Adapt the itinerary for families
Siena alone is easier with children. Remove the extra town and add rest. Product 8421 is local walking, not Florence transport or San Gimignano.
Frequently asked questions
Are three days enough?
For a focused first visit, not all Tuscany. Replace a whole day for Val d’Orcia or Saturnia rather than adding them.
Do I need a car?
Not for the core city route. Two towns on day two work better by tour/car; on public transport choose Siena alone.
Does this include arrival days?
It assumes three full days. Reduce sights if flights take place within them.
Is Lucca essential?
No. Omit it for children or a close departure.
Are bookings included?
No. This is an editorial plan; every stay/activity has separate prices and terms.
Can I reorder days?
Anchor your important ticket then adjust for weather and availability, checking last return services.
