Tuscany 5 Day Itinerary
Five full days balance cities and countryside: Florence, Pisa, Lucca, Siena and Val d’Orcia. We suggest three nights in Florence and two in Siena, with alternatives for one-base travellers or those without a car.
In this guide
Five-day overview
Assumes five full days and five nights, not all Tuscany. The first three days use Florence and public transport, followed by a Siena base. The rural day requires a car, driver or tour explicitly confirming stops; otherwise extend Siena or choose a suitable available excursion. Late arrival and early departure require cuts.
| 1 | Florence | Centre & Arno | Walking/local transport |
| 2 | Pisa | Piazza dei Miracoli & early return | Train/walking |
| 3 | Lucca | Walls & centre | Train/walking |
| 4 | Siena | Base transfer, centre & cathedral | Intercity then walking |
| 5 | Val d’Orcia | Pienza & San Quirico or Bagno Vignoni | Car/driver/confirmed tour |
Daily itinerary
Day 1 · Unhurried Florence
Morning · 2–3 hours
Explore the centre and cathedral exterior, then nearby squares. Choose only one timed interior if desired; dome and museum admission are not assumed.
Afternoon · 2–3 hours
Lunch and a 45–60-minute break, followed by Piazza della Signoria, Arno and Ponte Vecchio. Passing the Uffizi is not a museum visit.
Evening · 1–2 hours
A short Oltrarno walk or Piazzale Michelangelo if energy and weather permit. Count uphill access and return; a particular sunset time is not guaranteed.
Transport & break
Walk in manageable sections with café seating. Timings are independent planning estimates, not opening hours. Do not drive between every central sight.
Family alternative & booking
Choose squares, river and a longer break instead of climbing or a long museum. A photoshoot is optional and separately booked.
Booking & availability
Optional private Florence photoshoot, not admission to landmarks.
Day 2 · Unhurried Pisa
Morning · 3–4 hours
Train to Pisa and reach Piazza dei Miracoli. Begin with photos and exteriors; climb only with explicit tower admission and suitable participants.
Booking & availability
Check an option explicitly including the tower climb and age rules; not every option includes climbing.
Afternoon · 2–3 hours
Lunch and a break, then cathedral or baptistery around your ticket, or an Arno walk. Full-complex admission is not assumed.
Evening · 1–2 hours
Return to Florence for dinner and rest. Lucca has its own day.
Transport & break
Florence–Pisa about 1–1.5 hours for planning, plus travel to the square. Check works and returns; this is not a guaranteed timetable.
Family alternative & booking
Square photos, lunch and early return instead of climbing. Check tower age, accompaniment and ticket rules.
Day 3 · Lucca & its walls
Morning · 2–3 hours
Travel to Lucca and walk part of the walls before the centre. Completing the whole circuit is unnecessary.
Afternoon · 2–3 hours
Lunch and a break, Via Fillungo and Piazza Anfiteatro. Choose at most one optional interior.
Booking & availability
Local Lucca walking tour. Check cathedral admission/fees; Florence transport is separate.
Evening · 1–2 hours
Return to Florence and prepare luggage for tomorrow, with dinner nearby.
Transport & break
Allow roughly 1.5–2 hours each way by rail plus station walking. Check direct/change arrangements for your date.
Family alternative & booking
A short wall section and centre with breaks instead of a tower. Lucca’s local walk does not include Florence transfers.
Day 4 · Transfer to Siena
Morning · 3–4 hours
Check out early and travel to Siena. Store bags only if accommodation confirms it, then begin the centre. Do not book entry close to expected arrival.
Afternoon · 2–3 hours
Lunch and a break, Campo and cathedral around your ticket and time.
Booking & availability
Local Siena walking tour, not automatic Florence transport or full cathedral-complex admission.
Evening · 1–2 hours
Check in, a short walk and dinner. Do not add San Gimignano to a luggage-transfer day.
Transport & break
Plan roughly 1.5–2 hours from Florence depending on service, then hotel and centre access. Luggage, waiting and walking are extra.
Family alternative & booking
Choose only the centre and square if tired, shifting cathedral later if necessary. Check Sunday/holiday conditions for product 8421.
Day 5 · Val d’Orcia or extra Siena
Morning · 3–4 hours
With a car, driver or confirmed tour, visit Pienza’s centre and public views. Use permitted parking and check access.
Booking & availability
Optional Piccolomini Palace visit on the Pienza day, not transport or a whole-valley tour.
Afternoon · 2–3 hours
Lunch and a break, then San Quirico or Bagno Vignoni, not every town. The central historic pool is for viewing, not bathing.
Evening · 1–2 hours
Return to Siena and hand over any rental as agreed, then rest. For same-day departure, cut a stop and allow airport travel.
Transport & break
Allow roughly 1–1.5 hours each way from Siena towards Pienza as planning, plus village travel. The whole valley has no single journey time.
Family alternative & booking
Without confirmed transport extend Siena with a museum or rest around opening instead of unverified connections. A Siena walk is not a valley booking.
Essential bookings
Book both bases and priority timed entry first. Establish rural transport before buying scattered admissions. Val d’Orcia guides may display a separate Siena activity; it is not valley transport. Activity calendars appear below the relevant itinerary paragraphs.
Where to stay
Three Florence nights near SMN or centrally, then two Siena nights with confirmed luggage access. Choose around arrival points and parking if driving. A single Florence base reduces packing but adds rural travel; replace the final day with Chianti or a nearby activity if necessary. Check roads, vehicle needs and services for rural stays.
Hotels & accommodation in Tuscany
Choose dates, rooms and children’s ages, then compare location, total and cancellation. This TripMoo Trip.com link opens accommodation search, not a confirmed hotel booking or fixed price.
Airports & transport
Separate airport arrival from your base: check Florence/Pisa airport-to-station/city transport and final hotel access. Verify Pisa/Lucca trains and Florence–Siena services for your dates. Count checkout and luggage on day four. Val d’Orcia is a village region; product 8421 is not valley transport. Departures need airport travel, check-in and buffers.
Estimated budget
Editorial euro estimates per adult sharing a double, for five days and five nights, dated 3 November 2026; not live quotes. Includes accommodation share, food, intercity travel, limited admissions and a provisional shared rural-transport allowance. This is not a private-driver quote. Excludes international flights, shopping and costly extras; add any actual rural-transfer difference.

Family & travel tips
Wear suitable shoes, bring an evening layer and keep a rain alternative. Choose one main interior daily and avoid adjacent timed bookings. For driving check permitted parking/ZTL and child seats. Use a non-drinking driver after alcohol tasting. Verify opening and availability for your date.
Adapt the itinerary for families
Without confirmed transport extend Siena with a museum or rest around opening instead of unverified connections. A Siena walk is not a valley booking.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need two bases?
Not compulsory. Siena reduces rural road time; Florence alone reduces packing but needs a modified final day.
Can I do it without a car?
City days depend on checked public schedules. Day five needs confirmed transport or an extra Siena day instead.
Are arrival/departure days included?
It assumes five full days; remove sights or adjust nights if flights fall within them.
Can I add San Gimignano?
Replace Lucca or another part with confirmed transport rather than adding it to Siena and luggage transfer.
Does the budget include a private driver?
No. These are editorial allowances; obtain a group quote and add any difference.
Can I visit Saturnia?
Replace a full day with confirmed transport rather than combining it with Pienza in the same period.
