Rome 2-Day Itinerary
A short Rome visit focused on squares and fountains on Day 1, followed by the Colosseum and ancient Rome on Day 2. Choose the Vatican instead of the ancient-sites day if it is your priority, rather than adding it to an already full schedule. Adapt the route to flight times and family energy.

Your two days at a glance
Assumption: arrive on the morning of Day 1 and leave on the evening of Day 2, staying one night. For a late arrival, choose two squares. For an early departure, drop the Forum and shorten the Colosseum or view it from outside. Choose ancient Rome or the Vatican for Day 2, not both. Two full sightseeing days with arrival beforehand require an additional night outside this budget.

The two-day itinerary
Arrival, squares & fountains
Spanish Steps · Trevi · Pantheon · NavonaA flexible day starting after you settle in. The full walk suits an early arrival; choose just two stops if delayed.
Visit notes & practical details
Transport & timingAllow around 60–120 minutes from leaving airport arrivals to your hotel, depending on transport and location. Metro A to Spagna, then about 3–5 km on foot. Trevi–Pantheon: about 15 minutes; Pantheon–Navona: 5–10.
Suggested breakRest for 45–60 minutes after arrival, then take about an hour for a seated lunch. Add gelato and water breaks as needed.
Family alternativeChoose just Trevi and Navona, or replace some walking with an age-appropriate golf-cart tour. Do not force the full route after a tiring flight.
Before you goThe squares do not require a paid tour. Pantheon entry is separate; Trevi’s close-up area may have regulated access or charges, so check the guide. Book a tour only with adequate arrival margin.
The Colosseum, ancient Rome & departure
Colosseum · Optional Forum · AirportOne main timed visit followed by luggage collection and airport travel. Add the Forum only if departure timing allows; the Vatican is an alternative to this day.
Visit notes & practical details
Transport & timingMetro B to Colosseo, then about 2–4 km on foot depending on the Forum route. Include hotel return, luggage collection, airport travel and airline guidance; the train’s 32 minutes is not the whole journey.
Suggested breakHave a proper breakfast and take a 45–60 minute seated lunch/rest. Carry water: much of the archaeological area is exposed.
Family alternativeVisit only the Colosseum or use a child-focused tour instead of the self-guided route. For tired children, choose exterior views and a nearby square rather than entering two sites.
Before you goIf the Vatican is the priority, replace the Colosseum and Forum with an early Vatican Museums/Sistine Chapel visit of about 3–4 hours. Do not combine both options. Check Sunday closures, exceptions and your flight; omit the dome and basilica unless there is ample time.
Where to stay in Rome
A convenient base reduces travel time. Check actual room size, lifts, air conditioning and luggage storage, as well as child occupancy and city tax before booking.
Historic centre · Trevi / Pantheon
A convenient first-visit base near the squares. Expect higher room costs and restricted vehicle access on some streets. Choose a side street if quiet matters.
Monti · near the Colosseum
Useful for ancient Rome and local restaurants. Some lanes are steep or cobbled; check the approach if travelling with a stroller.
Prati · near the Vatican
An option for wider streets and easy Vatican access. Ottaviano station on Metro A helps connect to other areas.
Termini · transport convenience
Useful for the airport train and Metro A and B. Street and building quality varies; check recent reviews covering location and soundproofing.
Airports & getting around
From Fiumicino FCO
Leonardo Express connects the airport with Termini in about 32 minutes. The published official adult one-way fare is €14. Add time to reach the station and your hotel; 32 minutes is not a door-to-door journey.
From Ciampino CIA
Choose a direct coach to Termini or a pre-booked transfer to your address. Road times depend on traffic. Leonardo Express does not serve Ciampino.
Within Rome
Use Metro B for Colosseo and Metro A for Ottaviano and Spagna. Walk between the central squares. The published BIT fare is €1.50 for 100 minutes under ATAC rules; check Metro and validation conditions. Do not assume airport trains are included.
Departing on Day 2
Include luggage collection, airport travel and airline guidance before choosing ticket times. Confirm FCO or CIA; Leonardo Express serves FCO only. Tivoli and other day trips are outside this short itinerary.

Before you go
Room assumptions are €90–140 / €150–230 / €260–400 for one night by tier, divided between two adults. Figures cover the listed items and exclude flights, city tax, insurance, shopping, guided tours and private transfers. The budget entry allowance assumes basic Colosseum and Pantheon admission; replacing the Colosseum with the Vatican requires repricing the selected tickets. Do not count a guided tour and its included admission twice. Child costs depend on age and provider rules. Arrival the previous evening or departure on Day 3 requires extra accommodation.
Bookings to arrange first
Secure Colosseum and Vatican slots first, then organise the remaining days. Choose entry tickets or a guided tour to suit your needs; guided tours cost differently from basic admission. Check language, child rules, meeting point and cancellation terms.

Colosseum & Roman Forum tour
Day 2 · Check the Colosseum, Forum and Palatine inclusions. Arena and underground access require a product that explicitly includes them.
Vatican & Sistine Chapel · alternative
Instead of the Colosseum and Forum on Day 2, not an additional visit. Check the entry slot and departure time; a St Peter’s tour and dome are not automatically included.
Squares & fountains walking tour
Day 1 · An alternative to the self-guided walk after an early arrival. Check the route, language and Pantheon inclusions.

Practical travel tips
- Reserve timed-entry attractions first and build the rest of the week around them. Do not rely on same-day availability.
- In hot weather, visit outdoor sites early and rest at midday. Swap the park day for an indoor visit in rain, subject to ticket availability.
- Wear supportive shoes and carry water. Cobbles and stairs can tire children; bring a suitable stroller or shorten the route.
- Follow each church’s published dress requirements and allow time for security. A booking does not bypass security screening.
- Confirm the activity language and minimum age. A Chinese booking page or widget does not guarantee a Chinese-speaking guide.
- For limited mobility or older travellers, shorten the route and ask each site about accessible paths rather than assuming a step-free visit.
Frequently asked questions
Is two days enough for Rome?
For a short introduction with an early arrival and late departure: squares and the Colosseum, plus the Forum if time allows. The Vatican replaces ancient Rome; not every museum fits. If travel consumes most of both days, choose one main activity.
Is this suitable for children?
Choose two squares with seated breaks, followed by just the Colosseum on Day 2. Museums and the Forum can be omitted. Do not add a zoo, cooking class or day trip on top of this schedule.
When should I visit, and what should I pack?
Spring and autumn are often comfortable for walking, though crowds and rain are possible. Summer calls for heat-aware planning; winter has shorter daylight. Check the actual forecast before travelling rather than relying on seasonal descriptions alone.
Can I swap the two days?
Yes if arrivals and ticket slots permit. Book the Colosseum or Vatican first, then fit the squares around it. Vatican Museums normally close on Sundays except the last Sunday under the official calendar, with holiday exceptions.
Do I need a car?
Usually not for central Rome: walking, Metro and occasional transfers are simpler. A car adds parking and ZTL restrictions. For Tivoli, consider organised transport if you prefer to avoid connections.
Does one ticket cover all the sights?
No. Check each product. Vatican Museums admission is not a St Peter’s dome ticket, and Colosseum ticket types cover different areas. A standard transport pass does not automatically cover museums or the airport train.
How much walking is involved?
Allow roughly 2–7 km depending on the day, with sitting breaks. Museums and station access can add distance. Shorten the Forum or square walk when needed and use a licensed taxi if tired.
Are prices final, and can I cancel for free?
The budget is an estimate and provider prices change. Check the final total, fees and amendment/cancellation terms on the product page before payment. There is no universal free-cancellation promise.
