Your week at a glance
The seven days include arrival and departure. For a late arrival, move the first walk to Day 7 or simply have dinner and rest. Swap days around ticket availability, weather and closures. Do not buy overlapping tickets for the same attraction.

The seven-day itinerary
Arrive in Rome & settle in
Termini · Santa Maria MaggioreKeep arrival day gentle and avoid a prepaid activity that is hard to change. Settle in and discover the neighbourhood.
Visit notes & practical details
Transport & timingAllow roughly 60–120 minutes from leaving the arrivals hall to reaching your hotel, depending on transport and location. Optional walking: about 2–3 km.
Suggested breakRest at the hotel for 60–90 minutes before going out; have a snack and water.
Family alternativeIf children are tired, choose a nearby square or park and dinner. The church visit can wait.
Before you goServices, entry arrangements and dress rules can affect the church visit. Arrival times vary, so avoid booking an activity close to landing.
The Colosseum & ancient Rome
Colosseum · Forum · MontiGroup the main ancient sites into one day, then take a proper break before any evening walk.
Visit notes & practical details
Transport & timingMetro B to Colosseo, then walk. About 4–6 km across the day, potentially more inside the sites. Colosseum to Piazza Venezia takes roughly 15–20 minutes on foot.
Suggested breakAllow 60–90 minutes for a seated lunch. Carry water: much of the archaeological area is exposed.
Family alternativeChoose a shorter child-focused tour from the Rome with kids guide, or visit the Colosseum and a reduced section of the Forum.
Before you goDo not assume standard tickets include the arena or underground. Follow the validity and entry sequence of your product; avoid buying overlapping admission and tours.
The Vatican & the Tiber
Museums · Sistine Chapel · St Peter’s SquareA substantial cultural day: make the dome or Castel Sant’Angelo an alternative, not two compulsory additions.
Visit notes & practical details
Transport & timingMetro A to Ottaviano or Cipro, depending on the booked entrance. Allow about 20–30 minutes outside from the museums to St Peter’s Square. Total walking: around 4–7 km.
Suggested breakTake a quiet 60-minute lunch in Prati; you can return to the hotel before an evening walk.
Family alternativeUse a shorter museum route or choose the square and nearby outdoor spaces with a suitable family tour. Avoid adding the dome climb to an exhausting day.
Before you goMuseums admission is separate from the basilica and does not automatically include the dome. Check Sundays, holidays and services, and follow church dress requirements.
Rome’s squares, fountains & Pantheon
Spanish Steps · Trevi · Pantheon · NavonaA gradual walk across central Rome, broken up by lunch and gelato rather than rushing between photo stops.
Visit notes & practical details
Transport & timingMetro A to Spagna, then walk. Spagna–Trevi: about 10–15 minutes; Trevi–Pantheon: about 15; Pantheon–Navona: about 5–10. Total: around 3–5 km.
Suggested breakAllow a 60-minute lunch near the Pantheon and a gelato stop after Navona.
Family alternativeChoose only two squares before resting. A golf-cart tour is a paid alternative to walking; check age rules, boarding arrangements and inclusions.
Before you goWalking between the squares does not require a paid tour. Pantheon entry has separate tickets and rules. Trevi’s close-up area may have regulated access or charges; check the guide before visiting.
Borghese park & an Italian experience
Villa Borghese · Gallery or cooking optionA lighter day balancing green space with one local experience. Choose one main paid activity rather than doing every alternative.
Visit notes & practical details
Transport & timingMetro A to Flaminio or Spagna, followed by an uphill walk, or a taxi to a suitable entrance. Trastevere requires a separate transfer. Walking: roughly 3–5 km, depending on choices.
Suggested breakTake a 60–90 minute seated lunch; use the park to slow down rather than adding multiple sites.
Family alternativeChoose the park and Bioparco, or the park plus a class that accepts your children’s ages. Confirm allergy and participation rules.
Before you goBorghese Gallery requires reservations, including for some free-entry categories. Park access does not include the gallery. Check the cooking-class location before arranging evening transport.
Tivoli & its villa gardens
Hadrian’s Villa · Villa d’EsteAn optional excursion that deserves a full day. A transport-inclusive tour is simpler; independent visits need connections between sites.
Visit notes & practical details
Transport & timingA Rome-departure tour with clearly listed transport is easiest. Independently, plan a train/coach and a local connection. Allow 8–10 hours overall and about 4–6 km within the sites.
Suggested breakHave a one-hour lunch in Tivoli and add seated rests in the gardens where possible.
Family alternativeVisit only Villa d’Este to reduce transfers, or replace the excursion with Borghese park and a short activity in Rome. Check stairs and stroller routes.
Before you goConfirm included villas, return time, meeting point and cancellation terms. Rain, steps and exposed paths may call for changing the plan.
A relaxed final morning & departure
Near your hotel · AirportKeep the final day flexible around your flight and avoid distant sights or inflexible reservations.
Visit notes & practical details
Transport & timingOptional walking: around 1–3 km. For FCO include hotel-to-station access and train time, or road travel, plus your airline’s advised airport buffer.
Suggested breakTake a 30–45 minute café break near luggage storage and use the facilities before travelling.
Family alternativeAvoid a long shopping route. Choose a nearby square, an early meal and transport that suits luggage and any child-seat needs.
Before you goFor a morning flight, drop all sightseeing. Confirm the airport, arrival terminal, service hours and child arrangements with your transport provider.
Where to stay in Rome
A convenient base reduces travel time. Check actual room size, lifts, air conditioning and luggage storage, as well as child occupancy and city tax before booking.
Historic centre · Trevi / Pantheon
A convenient first-visit base near the squares. Expect higher room costs and restricted vehicle access on some streets. Choose a side street if quiet matters.
Monti · near the Colosseum
Useful for ancient Rome and local restaurants. Some lanes are steep or cobbled; check the approach if travelling with a stroller.
Prati · near the Vatican
An option for wider streets and easy Vatican access. Ottaviano station on Metro A helps connect to other areas.
Termini · transport convenience
Useful for the airport train and Metro A and B. Street and building quality varies; check recent reviews covering location and soundproofing.
Airports & getting around
From Fiumicino FCO
Leonardo Express connects the airport with Termini in about 32 minutes. The published official adult one-way fare is €14. Add time to reach the station and your hotel; 32 minutes is not a door-to-door journey.
From Ciampino CIA
Choose a direct coach to Termini or a pre-booked transfer to your address. Road times depend on traffic. Leonardo Express does not serve Ciampino.
Within Rome
Use Metro B for Colosseo and Metro A for Ottaviano and Spagna. Walk between the central squares. The published BIT fare is €1.50 for 100 minutes under ATAC rules; check Metro and validation conditions. Do not assume airport trains are included.
Tivoli & the return airport journey
For Tivoli, choose a tour with transport or plan a train/coach plus a separate local connection between the villas. On departure day, allow for traffic and security and follow your airline’s airport arrival guidance.

Before you go
Room assumptions: €90–140 / €150–230 / €260–400 per room per night, depending on tier. Totals cover the stated accommodation, food, transport and entry allowance. Flights, city tax, insurance, shopping, guided tours, cooking classes and private transport to Tivoli are excluded. If booking a package tour, replace overlapping transport/admission allowances instead of counting them twice. Budget for children separately according to age and provider rules.
Bookings to arrange first
Secure Colosseum and Vatican slots first, then organise the remaining days. Choose entry tickets or a guided tour to suit your needs; guided tours cost differently from basic admission. Check language, child rules, meeting point and cancellation terms.

Tivoli from Rome
Day 6 · Check which villas, transfers, meals and duration are included before paying.

Practical travel tips
- Reserve timed-entry attractions first and build the rest of the week around them. Do not rely on same-day availability.
- In hot weather, visit outdoor sites early and rest at midday. Swap the park day for an indoor visit in rain, subject to ticket availability.
- Wear supportive shoes and carry water. Cobbles and stairs can tire children; bring a suitable stroller or shorten the route.
- Follow each church’s published dress requirements and allow time for security. A booking does not bypass security screening.
- Confirm the activity language and minimum age. A Chinese booking page or widget does not guarantee a Chinese-speaking guide.
- For limited mobility or older travellers, shorten the route and ask each site about accessible paths rather than assuming a step-free visit.
Frequently asked questions
Is seven days enough for Rome?
Yes for a balanced first visit, with the main monuments, a lighter park and experience day, a Tivoli excursion, and arrival and departure time. Replace Tivoli with another Rome day if you want more museums.
Is this itinerary suitable for children?
Adapt it by shortening museum visits, adding breaks and choosing Borghese park or Bioparco instead of a long gallery visit. Check cooking-class and tour age rules. Do not combine the gallery, zoo and cooking class in a single day.
When should I visit, and what should I pack?
Spring and autumn are often comfortable for walking, though crowds and rain are possible. Summer calls for heat-aware planning; winter has shorter daylight. Check the actual forecast before travelling rather than relying on seasonal descriptions alone.
Can I change the order of the days?
Yes: fix ticket slots first. The Vatican Museums normally close on Sundays except the last Sunday under the official calendar; holidays and special events can change arrangements. Check each attraction’s calendar.
Do I need a car?
Usually not for central Rome: walking, Metro and occasional transfers are simpler. A car adds parking and ZTL restrictions. For Tivoli, consider organised transport if you prefer to avoid connections.
Does one ticket cover all the sights?
No. Check each product. Vatican Museums admission is not a St Peter’s dome ticket, and Colosseum ticket types cover different areas. A standard transport pass does not automatically cover museums or the airport train.
How much walking is involved?
Allow roughly 2–7 km depending on the day, with sitting breaks. Museums and station access can add distance. Shorten the Forum or square walk when needed and use a licensed taxi if tired.
Are prices final, and can I cancel for free?
The budget is an estimate and provider prices change. Check the final total, fees and amendment/cancellation terms on the product page before payment. There is no universal free-cancellation promise.
