Rome Travel Budget
Start with days, nights and travellers, then separate the room cost from per-person spending. This guide uses five days and four nights, with three planning tiers and official reference prices for selected items. Flights, city tax and extras are added separately.

Cost categories explained
Accommodation: room or per-person share?
A major adjustable costMatch nights to rooms, not sightseeing days. A double room is not automatically charged twice because two adults share it.
Calculation & saving notes
Transport impactA cheaper distant hotel may add travel time and fares; compare the total trip.
Meals & restCheck included breakfast before budgeting the same meal twice.
Travelling with childrenConfirm child occupancy and extra beds rather than dividing a two-adult quote across a whole family.
Before paymentCheck currency, dates, final total and whether city tax is excluded.
Food & drinks
A flexible daily allowanceKeep food as a daily item and multiply by actual days in the city.
Calculation & saving notes
Transport impactDo not cross the city merely to save a small amount on a meal.
Meals & restKeep a seated meal instead of turning savings into constant walking.
Travelling with childrenChildren’s portions and meals are not always half an adult price; use actual needs.
Before paymentAdjust if breakfast is included. A paid cooking class may replace a meal rather than being counted on top.
Local transport & airports
Separate daily travel from arrivalWalking can reduce journeys without making transport automatically free.
Calculation & saving notes
Transport impactKeep an optional taxi margin for tiredness or rain rather than assuming a fixed taxi cost every day.
Meals & restGroup nearby sights to reduce transfers and protect breaks.
Travelling with childrenCheck child rules by service and child seats for private transport instead of applying adult prices to all ages.
Before paymentCheck validation, route eligibility and destination; luggage or extras depend on the service.
Admission & guided tours
Basic entry or an experience?Choose sights first, then compare what you receive rather than stacking overlapping tickets.
Calculation & saving notes
Transport impactIf a tour includes transport or admission, replace those allowances to avoid double counting.
Meals & restDo not add a sight only because a pass includes it; time and rest matter.
Travelling with childrenConcessions depend on age, nationality and rules; children are not automatically free for every product.
Before paymentCheck names, times, language, cancellation and inclusions. Affiliate products need not match official basic entry prices.
Flights, tax & extras
Outside the sample totalA Rome land budget is not the full cost of an international journey.
Calculation & saving notes
Transport impactCompare baggage, airport access and arrival airport before choosing between flights.
Meals & restKeep an optional margin suited to your style rather than pre-spending the whole budget.
Travelling with childrenEnter children’s ages, room setup and room count correctly; family needs can change the assumptions.
Before paymentCheck exchange rates, card charges and provider terms; an estimate is not a final-price promise.
Official reference prices · not guided-tour prices
Reviewed 25 October 2026. Basic transport/admission references come from official providers, not the paid-tour prices behind buttons. Hotel, food and trip totals are editorial estimates with stated assumptions, not live pricing.
Build your own worked example
Illustrative calculation, not a booking offer: two adults, one room at €120 × 4 nights = €480; food €30 × 5 days × 2 = €300; local transport €5 × 5 × 2 = €50; tickets €60 × 2 = €120; airports €28 × 2 = €56. Total €1,006 for two adults, or €503 each. Add flights, accommodation tax and excluded items according to your bookings.
Where to stay in Rome
Compare the full four-night room total with cancellation terms, bedding and occupancy, then divide among those sharing it. Check city tax, breakfast, cooling, lifts and luggage storage before booking.
Historic centre · Trevi / Pantheon
A convenient first-visit base near the squares. Expect higher room costs and restricted vehicle access on some streets. Choose a side street if quiet matters.
Monti · near the Colosseum
Useful for ancient Rome and local restaurants. Some lanes are steep or cobbled; check the approach if travelling with a stroller.
Prati · near the Vatican
An option for wider streets and easy Vatican access. Ottaviano station on Metro A helps connect to other areas.
Termini · transport convenience
Useful for the airport train and Metro A and B. Street and building quality varies; check recent reviews covering location and soundproofing.
Airports & getting around
From Fiumicino FCO
Leonardo Express connects the airport with Termini in about 32 minutes. The published official adult one-way fare is €14. Add time to reach the station and your hotel; 32 minutes is not a door-to-door journey.
From Ciampino CIA
Choose a direct coach to Termini or a pre-booked transfer to your address. Road times depend on traffic. Leonardo Express does not serve Ciampino.
Within Rome
Use Metro B for Colosseo and Metro A for Ottaviano and Spagna. Walk between the central squares. The published BIT fare is €1.50 for 100 minutes under ATAC rules; check Metro and validation conditions. Do not assume airport trains are included.
Tivoli & the return airport journey
For Tivoli, choose a tour with transport or plan a train/coach plus a separate local connection between the villas. On departure day, allow for traffic and security and follow your airline’s airport arrival guidance.

Before payment
Room assumptions per night: budget €90–140, mid-range €150–230, comfort €260–400; each adult pays half for four nights. Daily food: €25–35 / €40–55 / €65–90. Child charges depend on age, room occupancy and rules.
Choosing bookings & tickets
Compare final totals and inclusions, not just a “deal” label. Basic admission differs from a guided tour, and provider currency may differ from the euros used here. This workbook row has no main widget; the options below come from attraction rows.

Save without overloading the trip
- Group areas, choose free activities or exterior visits where preferred, and compare accommodation with transport costs. Do not buy overlapping tours or tickets.
- Calculate rooms and nights, food by day, then actual transport and admission. Do not simply scale the five-day total: airport travel and tickets do not recur daily.
- Not in the sample table. Confirm the rate, exemptions and whether booking already collected it, then add it only once.
- Not necessarily. Accommodation, tickets and transport vary by age, occupancy and rules; enter correct ages.
- No. Add only the services you will use and check included sites, reservations and transport. Do not assume Vatican or airport-train coverage without explicit terms.
