Where to stay in Rome
A convenient base reduces travel time. Check actual room size, lifts, air conditioning and luggage storage, as well as child occupancy and city tax before booking.
Historic centre · Trevi / Pantheon
A convenient first-visit base near the squares. Expect higher room costs and restricted vehicle access on some streets. Choose a side street if quiet matters.
Monti · near the Colosseum
Useful for ancient Rome and local restaurants. Some lanes are steep or cobbled; check the approach if travelling with a stroller.
Prati · near the Vatican
An option for wider streets and easy Vatican access. Ottaviano station on Metro A helps connect to other areas.
Termini · transport convenience
Useful for the airport train and Metro A and B. Street and building quality varies; check recent reviews covering location and soundproofing.
Airports & getting around
From Fiumicino FCO
Leonardo Express connects the airport with Termini in about 32 minutes. The published official adult one-way fare is €14. Add time to reach the station and your hotel; 32 minutes is not a door-to-door journey.
From Ciampino CIA
Choose a direct coach to Termini or a pre-booked transfer to your address. Road times depend on traffic. Leonardo Express does not serve Ciampino.
Within Rome
Use Metro B for Colosseo and Metro A for Ottaviano and Spagna. Walk between the central squares. The published BIT fare is €1.50 for 100 minutes under ATAC rules; check Metro and validation conditions. Do not assume airport trains are included.
Tivoli & the return airport journey
For Tivoli, choose a tour with transport or plan a train/coach plus a separate local connection between the villas. On departure day, allow for traffic and security and follow your airline’s airport arrival guidance.

Avoid duplication
If a tour includes transport or admission, do not add the same item again.
Keep flexibility
Leave optional time and spending margin rather than pre-booking every hour.

Frequently asked questions
Which mistake should I address first?
Check the ticket, airport and timing: their effects are harder to recover from once a packed itinerary is fixed. Then choose a suitable base and realistic transport plan.
Do I need a car?
Central Rome can usually be approached with walking, public transport and occasional transfers. If driving, check parking and official restricted-zone rules first.
Can I switch between my phone and card for Tap & Go?
Use the same card or device you started with under ATAC rules; do not assume the phone and physical card are identical to the system.
Is the Vatican one visit with one ticket?
The Vatican Museums/Sistine Chapel differ from St Peter’s and its dome. Check inclusions and do not assume direct passage.
Is Trevi completely free?
Public viewing differs from close-up basin access. From 2 February 2026, the basin area has a €2 charge unless exempt under official rules.
How can I avoid overspending?
Separate room totals from per-person shares and add tax, airports and optional experiences. Compare final totals rather than the first displayed price.
Can children follow the same schedule?
Adapt to age and energy. Keep rest, a seated meal and one main sight rather than trying everything.
What should I save offline?
Hotel address, a saved map/route, booking copies and important contacts. Store sensitive details securely.
